EMPTY PROMENADE

EDINBURGH | Portobello

09-08-2024

The evening was cold. Wind came from the sea.

Portobello is usually full in August. People. Noise. Movement.
This time it was different. Almost empty.

I started walking along the promenade. Light was low.
The sun was close to the horizon. Shadows got longer.
Clouds softened everything. Nothing dramatic. Just clean light.

It was enough.

A couple stayed by the fire. They didn’t move much.
Benches were empty. No one waiting. No rush.

I took a few frames. Slow. No pressure.
Everything was simple.

Then the camera died.

Battery. Twenty minutes in. Finished.

No drama. Just silence and a dead screen.

I switched to the phone. Not by choice.
Just what was left.

It worked.

Smaller. More inconspicuous. Not my jam.
Some frames I would not get with a camera.

Not better. Definitely different.

The walk changed. Less control. More instinct.
Less thinking.

That kinda helped.

The evening didn’t go as planned.
Better that way.

Most of the time you don’t need perfect conditions.
You need to stay and keep looking.

That’s it.
