Murrayfield Stillness

EDINBURGH | MURRAYFIELD TRAM STOP

28-07-2024

You don’t get many afternoons like this in Scotland.
The light showed up and stayed for a while.

I was passing Murrayfield.
No plan. Just stopped.

The tram stop was already there.
People waiting. People leaving. Some in a hurry. Some with nowhere to go.

Nothing special at first.

Then the light dropped lower.
It started cutting through the steps and the railings.
Concrete turned warm. Steel held the lines.

Everything slowed down.

You could see it in small things.
A man crossing without looking up.
Someone sitting still, not checking the time.
A couple walking and not speaking.

Most people were just passing through.
They stayed for a second and disappeared.

That’s all it was.
Waiting. Moving. Standing still for no reason.

The place doesn’t change.
The steps stay the same. The lines don’t move.

Only the people do.

Some rush to catch the tram.
Some miss it and don’t react.
Some just stand there, watching nothing in particular.

The light holds it together for a moment.
Then it’s gone again.

And it goes back to grey.
